I love Oregon, but one of the downsides of moving away from Des Moines is missing out on the great community of musicians that I was a part of. One of the most anticipated albums of the last few years has been painfully slow to completion; every time I saw Jacob Tyler Wolfgang I had to pester him about his unfinished, but already legendary album “To the Moon, Kid.”
It was no myth. Despite the arduous waiting, “To the Moon, Kid” was released yesterday and was well worth the patience. I’ve heard the album, listening over and over… and I certainly recommend it.
I have to take a moment and profile one of my favorite local artists, Jacob Tyler Wolfgang. Jacob and his band are playing at the Finn Miles Modern Saints EP release at the Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines, IA on Dec. 19th per my request, so it’s only good and proper I tell you why I invited him to this momentous event.
First of all, the man can really meowl…in a good way. It’s kind of a Counting Crows + REM drawl that drips with emotion. Second, he writes really good songs, really tongue and cheek stuff, a lot like M. Ward + Elliott Smith.
Thirdly…he raises the bar when there’s a good sized crowd in the room.
