Dustin Smith Band

Posted: December 15th, 2010 | Author: napkinsketch | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , | No Comments »

I have to take a moment and profile another fantastic artist from Des Moines, Dustin Smith. Dustin will graciously be playing at the Finn Miles Modern Saints EP release at the Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines, IA on Dec. 19th, a lucky day for all in attendance.

Why did I invite Dustin? Because he’s really good. The man can sing…his style makes me think of a male Norah Jones, his delivery is cool like Bob Dylan. Plus, he’s a really sweet guy, I first got to know him as part of a fundraiser for homeless youth…we misspelled his name on the poster (Dustine) and he was nonchalant about the whole thing.

Oh yeah, and his band…jazz pros. All of them are expert players, giving the country jazz styling of Dustin Smith an authenticity which is rare in these parts of the world.

Do you want to see Dustin? Attend the Finn Miles Modern Saints EP Release – Sunday December 19th at 10pm and we’ll throw in Jacob Tyler Wolfgang and Finn Miles for free.

Jacob Tyler Wolfgang

I have to take a moment and profile one of my favorite local artists, Jacob Tyler Wolfgang. Jacob and his band are playing at the Finn Miles Modern Saints EP release at the Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines, IA on Dec. 19th per my request, so it’s only good and proper I tell you why I invited him to this momentous event.

First of all, the man can really meowl…in a good way. It’s kind of a Counting Crows + REM drawl that drips with emotion. Second, he writes really good songs, really tongue and cheek stuff, a lot like M. Ward + Elliott Smith.

Thirdly…he raises the bar when there’s a good sized crowd in the room.

There you have it, Jacob Tyler Wolfgang…one more great reason to attend the Finn Miles Modern Saints EP Release – Sunday December 19th at 10pm.

Pinnacle Records – the able label

Posted: December 9th, 2010 | Author: napkinsketch | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Every once in a while I get back on my soapbox and extol the excellence of my record label, Pinnacle Records. That’s right, I’m an artist who is glad they have a label. I’m glad I have a team behind my music to help put out albums (like the soon to be released Modern Saints). They help with the press releases, distribution and are supportive of the music…in fact Darren is playing drums in my band!

So, cheers to the good guys, the little guys, the people who matter. Thanks to Darren and Christina at Pinnacle I get to focus on making the best music I can make, and everybody gets a decent slice of the pie.

StoryhillFest Midwest

Posted: September 7th, 2010 | Author: finnmiles | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , | No Comments »

We don’t usually get the chance to “get away,” but this Labor Day we jaunted up to northern MN to a fantastic camp called Clearwater Forest. Storyhill fest Midwest was picturesque; beautiful weather, a super-chill crowd of folk-lovers, and a camp full of superstar musicians and songwriters.

I’ll add more pictures…but here’s the list. Listen to these people!

Conner Garvey

Carrie Elkin

Danny Schmidt

Anais Mitchell

John Mieras

Justin Roth

Johnsmith

Meg Hutchinson

Jonathan Byrd

and of course…

You might recognize something familiar about this Dwolla highlight of Des Moines local T-shirt company 8/7 Central…

They’re using Finn Miles music, and we’re glad.

8/7 Central are good friends and make great shirts. Dwolla might reinvent how E-commerce is handled. We’re glad to be in such good company with innovative and well-thought folks.

Our dear friend in Tyke just finished recording an EP with Finn Miles member and talented producer Scott Gratton. The music isn’t online yet, but you can see Finn Miles and Tyke live at a couple of shows over the next month. C’mon out!

The Talented Mr. Scott Gratton

Oh, what a family! My brother, Scott Gratton is a natural talent. He’s been an asset to Finn Miles, as well as many other bands around the Midwest. Scott is finally starting to get his own splendid tunes out there. This video is from a short set played at the Mars Cafe in October, 2009. Watch this guy…he’s amazing!

The Talented Seedlings

Posted: October 18th, 2009 | Author: finnmiles | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

Something’s going on in Des Moines right now. A talented crop of singer/songwriters are releasing new music, playing incredible shows and raising the bar on the Midwest music scene.

One of these talented young lads is Danny Heggen of the Seedlings.

Danny has just released a rustic EP of original gems named “Everything Comes from Something.” It’s a wonderful precursor to what I hope is a long writing and recording career from Danny. Check out his music, and definately catch one of his live shows. It’ll be worth it!
