We enjoyed a phenomenal show at the Vaudeville Mews Sunday night with other great acts, including Gabe Cordova, The Lonesome Heroes, and Dustin Smith. We opened our set with an unreleased song named “Winteresque.” Enjoy the video!
We’ve got a great song “Looper” that we’ll be sharing with you a live shows. Wanna sing along? Here’s the lyric sheet. Print it off and see me before the show if you’d like to join us on stage to sing!
Looper
You try to make it fit, you can’t make it fit
You’re living over flames, you’re so sick of it
over and over and over and over again
You’re running through life with legs of cement
you’re crying ’bout your life of crime and punishment
over and over and over and over again
Oh, Oh Oh!
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh Oh Oh!
You’re hungry for the real thing, your heart sings the well springs
in your soul, but ohhh, ohhh these hands won’t let go, these hands won’t let go.
Well the echoes are calling, the feathers are falling
the waters are rising, you’re falling apart
the distance is growing, your weakness is showing
the dogs of the day are tearing you apart
they’re tearing you apart, they’re tearing at your heart
they had you from the start, had you from the start
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
You’ve got to turn it around
Oh, Oh Oh!
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh Oh Oh!
Oh, Oh Oh!
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh Oh Oh!
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
You’ve got to turn it around
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
You’ve got to turn it around
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
There’s a better way
You’ve got to turn it around
Just a note to anyone thinking about heading out to the Vaudeville Mews on Sunday night, not only can you catch Finn Miles, but I’ve been really excited to hear the Dustin Smith Band. I’ve not had the chance to meet these guys yet, but they have a really cool rockabilly, country blues vibe going on. Check ‘em out, then come out the the Vaudeville Mews on Sunday, June 28th at 8pm and hear them, Finn Miles, and the Lonesome Heroes.
Here’s what happens when you begin a distributed creative services and art organization…you begin having text chat discussions on whether your business cards should be made out of felt or woodburned on to bamboo!
Josh: yeah…about those
i’ve had an idea for some freaking sweet business cards
me: yeah?
do tell.
2:03 PM I hope they are transformers…
Josh: hehe, not quite, but fancier than the standard thing
they’d be made of wood with the text burnt in and a design on the back thats like a puzzle piece of a bigger design
2:04 PM me: oh…way cool.
and when the puzzle comes together it’s the entire NS logo on the puzzle!
It seems that brother bands are all the rage (Jonas, Avett, Bacon, etc) as well as spousal arrangements (Mates of State, White Stripes…kinda, Derek Webb/Sandra McCraken) but we’ve got it all beat. Yes, Finn Miles includes two brothers, a wife, and a jolly assortment of friends, more than friends, and neighbors. Community…yes. It’s a bit of an indie-collective good time.
In 2008 a random group of friends and associates living in the Drake area of Des Moines happened upon a colorful little flier announcing the 48 Film Project? “Do you guys wanna do this?” asked Paul? “Yeah, sure. Sounds like fun.” was the general response. From this nonchelant exchange a seed of creativity was born and the newly christened “Napkin Sketch” group found.
Napkin Sketch - 48 Hour Film Project
During the 2008 48 Film Project this team, comprised of Josh Larson, Jessie Larson, Wayde Stover, Erin Stover, Scott Yoshimura, Scott Gratton, Paul Gratton, Matt Shwery, and Ben Whitmer made a fantastic film, and found new friends, and a new passion in filmmaking and creative development.
Now this team is preparing for the 2009 48 Film Project, as well as looking at other creative arts projects in the Central Iowa area. Keep track of of our fun antics here at Napkin-sketch.com!
I’m pretty well settled into Ames for the summer now and will hopefully get a few more of these done during my brief stay here. Samantha just got back from studying abroad in China and brought back culture, a new haircut, cool clothes and a creepy chicken foot for me to eat (I tried, it didn’t work). Anyway, with the blazing summer heat emanating into my room, she pulled out her trusty uke and gave it a go. I’m quite proud of her as she’s only been writing and playing music for about a year now. So here it is. It’s the most pleasant tune about a weed that you’re likely to hear. Enjoy.
